Jigme Namgyel Engineering College with the support of Bhutan Media Foundation conducted training on basic journalism to the members of Media Club, Publication Unit and Student Affairs from 16th-17th May 2022 on campus. The training was resourced by Mr. Needrup Zangpo,Executive Director, Bhutan Media Foundation who is also the Chairperson of the Media Council of Bhutan.
The two days training covered wide range of subjects which include basic understanding of news, what makes news, features of news writing, drafting and editing in line with choice of styles, interview tips, and the ethical valuesthat one bear as a reporter. The training comprises of lecture sessions, demonstrations, discussion and practical activities for the participants. During the practical session, participants were made to identify the story considering various aspects of subject and to collect data required for the story to draft the report. The resource person closely guided the participants in group and edited the draft reports shared by each group.
Towards the end of the second day session, Executive Director consented to provide awareness on the use of social media and its ethics to staff and all final year students. The talk highlighted on the growth of social media users across the globe and in the country. The staff and students were also made aware on the some of the ethical and legal rights while using social media. The training sessions was found very educative, informative and valuable to the participants and to the college as whole. On the other hand, the awareness talk on the use of social media has been an essential guide to every individual.
The College would like convey deep gratitude to the Executive Director, Bhutan Media Foundation and the Chairperson of the Media Council of Bhutan for not only accepting and training the participants but also for lunch, refreshments, and certificates awarded to all the participants.
