The Honourable Opposition Leader, Lyonpo Pema Chewang, visited JNEC on September 25, 2024. His Excellency had a pleasant and engaging session with the students and staff. He began by introducing himself and then shared his journey to the leader of the current opposition party, the Bhutan Tendrel Party. He also fondly recollected the warm hospitality he received from JNEC during the COVID period when he served as the head of the Eastern Region COVID19 task force under the Royal command.
In his address to the staff and students, he highlighted the important roles of Parliament in the country. He emphasized that the opposition party’s role is to support the government’s agenda when it benefits the nation, while also opposing agendas that may not be in the best interest of the country. He aimed to clarify any misunderstandings among citizens regarding the responsibilities of the opposition party.
His Excellency shared valuable advice to the students by reiterating the 5Cs mentioned by His Majesty the King during the Royal Address to the staff and students of Sherubtse College. The 5Cs stand for Certificates, Credentials, Creativity, Communication, and Character, with Character being the most crucial among them.
During the Q&A session, His Excellency outlined the Bhutan Tendrel Party’s plans for improving the national education system. Students also raised concerns about the discontinuation of degree programs in Power and Survey Engineering at JNEC. In response, His Excellency assured the staff and students that these issues would be submitted to the upcoming Parliament session.
