On 8th March, 2018 Jigme Namgyel Engineering College participated in the collaborative seminar organized by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and National Land Commission Secretariat (NLCS). The Seminar on Geographic Information System (GIS) and its Application and Possibility was held in College of Science and Technology, Sherubtse College and also JNEC mainly to advocate on Geospatial Information and its technology transfer to the academics and leaners who are specializing in the related field of study.
The Seminar was led by Chief Representative of JICA, Mr. Koji Yamada with the volunteers from JICA currently working with Ugyen Wangchuck Institute of Conversation and Environment (UWICE), PASCO a World’s Largest Geospatial Group, and officials from NLCS, Department of Road, Department of Human Settlement.
During the Seminar, the participants from JICA and NLCS presented history of development of Survey in Bhutan, current state of the Geospatial infrastructure in Bhutan, components of technology transfer from JICA project and on Continuously Operating Reference Station (CORS) network. The seminar also gave an avenue for an academics and learners to explore on innovative application of GIS as the participants shared on practical application of GIS in Infrastructure Planning, Urban/ Regional Planning, and Disaster Risk Management.
In addition to that JNEC Faculty and a student under Surveying Programme presented on ‘Precipitation Induced Flash Flood Modelling and Hazard Zone Mapping of Sarpang’, ‘Update on GIS related Projects/Activities carried out by Students: Surveying Programme-JNEC’, and Topographic Mapping of the recent survey camp held in Gedu College of Business Studies.
The event was very important for JNEC as it has enhanced the knowledge on the GIS and its application in various aspect. Therefore the seminar have created an avenue to embark on conducting research using geospatial information and above all improving the quality of education. In addition the linkage among the organization has strengthen and in near future the organizations will be sharing their expertise and look into future collaboration for knowledge and skills transfer.
